Africa’s healthcare challenges cannot be solved by imported solutions alone. They require locally built innovation, strong healthcare systems, and leaders willing to reimagine what is possible for the continent. I have dedicated my career to building medical technologies, ecosystems, and partnerships that enable African healthcare providers to deliver better care through sustainable, locally relevant innovation.
I am the Founder and CEO of MEDevice Africa and MEDevice Africa EquipNet, where I am working toward a bold vision of delivering 10 million African-developed and manufactured medical devices to hospitals across the continent by 2040, while building a world-class, Africa-centric equipment management ecosystem.
I lead this team because I have seen the challenges firsthand, and I have the engineering and leadership expertise to turn the vision of a self-reliant African medtech industry into a reality.
Since 2024, I have focused on building a “machine” that provides end-to-end solutions for the East African medtech ecosystem, from medical device design and manufacturing to pioneering EquipNet, our medtech lifecycle management platform.
My leadership is grounded in a strong technical foundation. I earned both my B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and M.Sc. in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from Stanford University, specializing in medical device development and commercialization. I later spent ten years at St. Jude Medical, now part of Abbott, where I worked in pacemaker and defibrillator R&D, led international manufacturing projects, and drove process improvement initiatives as well as strategic innovation focused on emerging markets.
I am also an inventor and entrepreneur who believes deeply in the power of local innovation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I led a team of engineers in developing AfriVent, a low-cost ventilator designed specifically for African healthcare settings and rural providers. The project went on to win the 2021 ASME ISHOW award, demonstrating that African-led innovation can meet global standards while addressing local healthcare realities.
Beyond my own inventions, which include a US patent for a diagnostic device and 3 Kenyan pending patents for healthcare inventions, I have dedicated myself to building the broader MedTech environment. As the former Chief Technology Officer at Villgro Africa, I grew a portfolio of startups and developed the frameworks necessary to move ideas from concepts to regulatory approval. That experience deepened my understanding of the systemic financial, operational, and regulatory hurdles facing healthcare innovators across the continent and strengthened my conviction to build sustainable solutions right here at home.
To ensure this dream is a shared one, I founded the Transforming African Medtech Conference in 2023, bringing together innovators, policymakers, researchers, clinicians, and industry leaders committed to shaping the future of African healthcare innovation. The conference was created to help accelerate the transition from aid-dependent, import-heavy medical technology toward a thriving and self-sustaining MedTech ecosystem.
I believe Africa has the talent, urgency, and opportunity to become a global force in MedTech innovation. My goal is not only to build medical technologies, but also to help create the systems, partnerships, and infrastructure that will define the future of healthcare across the continent.
